AR + ID | RED HOUSE
TYPE: Intermediate Terrace House (Re-construction)
STATUS: Completed 2023
SCOPE: Architecture + Interior
CLIENT: Private, Singapore
BRIEF: 3 Kids, Guest Room, Play & study areas, internal courtyard
COLLABORATORS: Project undertaken with FARM
With a giant sloping roof, the red house is imagined to feel like a humble single storey home for a family of 3 kids.
Step in & a meandering path through a small garden of tall grasses greets. This leads beneath the giant roof with a intended tree space into a quieter family’s main public space. These layers were intentional to maximise privacy; the family can peek over the landscape to the outside & vice versa.
To reinforce the family’s love of nature, a courtyard with a single large tree centers the house. The dining area of the space space looks into it, as the tree watches all the various rooms upwards within the house. Even the powder room, designed to feel open, offers a quiet hidden spot to admire this courtyard & the shadows from the skylight at times.
Upstairs, rooms were planned for everyone to look into the courtyard, which expands into a family space of sorts. Their bedrooms take on individual colours to reflect their personalities, while united under the giant roof. right above, the master bedroom commands the best view of the house out of the giant roof & also within, into the courtyard. It was designed to feel like a quiet sanctuary, with a compact outdoor balcony as entrance.
As a reminder of the partially repurposed old house, grilles that were used in old windows & doors, were repurposed & regroup together into a composition used as the entrance gate & the courtyard’s skylight.
